description
Franchise of 7 years awarded to London & South Coast Ltd (renamed Connex Rail Ltd) on 12 April 1996, starting on 26 May 1996.

The agreement included a unique clause which allowed a subsequent bid for an extension to 15 years. The operator duly submitted proposals for an extension in 1998 which were rejected by the Office of Passenger Rail Franchising..

Proposals were invited by the Shadow Strategic Rail Authority in November 1999 for a replacement South Central franchise (also for Chiltern and Intercity East Coast).

Connex (among others) prequalified for the next South Central contract in December 1999 and was shortlisted in March 2000.

However, the existing franchise was transferred to Govia on 26 August 2001.
