This was one of three first-generation franchises serving East Anglia (the others were Anglia Railways and WAGN). Commitments included additional services and £4m invested in station improvements.

An additional commitment to phase out the last slam-door trains on FGE routes was agreed by FirstGroup with the Office of Passenger Rail Franchising in March 1998.

Franchise remapping meant this franchise was not renewed. Instead, FGE services were combined with those of Anglia Railways and part of WAGN to form Greater Anglia in April 2004.
