description
This was a jointly-held franchise, with FirstGroup owning 55% and Keolis 45%.

The brand name TransPennine Express had been introduced in 1998 by the former franchise Northern Spirit, which was inherited by its successor owner, Arriva Trains Northern.

TransPennine Express became a separate franchise in 2004 as part of franchise remapping by the Strategic Railway Authority. The SRA divided services in the north of England so that TPE gained the longer regional routes while more local services were allocated to another new franchise, Northern.

The original end date was 1 February 2012, then extended to terminate between April 2014 and March 2015, before a further extension to April 2016 was confirmed on 20 March 2015.
