The Labour Government elected on 4 July 2024 announced that all National Rail Contracts would be terminated and run by the Department for Transport’s Operator of Last Resort (now DfT Operator Limited) until Great British Railways could take over.
Each contract would be terminated when it expired or at the first available break point (which may be the ‘core expiry date’), and possibly sooner in the event of a breach of contract by the operator.
The termination date of this operator’s contract is 1 February 2026.

description This contract operates under two brands. One was West Midlands Railways for local services in the West Midlands. The other was London Northwestern Railway for main line services from London Euston to Northampton and Birmingham, and also for branch lines from Watford Junction to St Albans Abbey (the Abbey Line) and from Bletchley to Bedford (the Marston Vale Line).
The former franchise was to have ended in April 2026, but there was a possible extension of up to 26 reporting periods (two years).
This National Rail Contract will be renationalised on 1 February 2026.
