Franchise replacing the previous contract of the same name, with a similar service area. However, this franchise includes a commitment to enlarge the fleet to deal with existing and predicted growth in demand. Some of the additional rolling stock will be new, but the rest will consist of units cascaded from the south east. The end date could have been extended by up to 13 reporting periods (52 weeks).
The original termination date of April 2025 was cut back to 1 March 2020 by the Government on 29 January 2020, after widespread complaints about Northern’s performance. The operation was then transferred to the DfT's Operator of Last Resort until further notice.
