description
The previous franchise had been suspended in March 2020 when the DfT introduced Emergency Measures Agreements because of the Covid pandemic. These were followed by Emergency Recovery Measures Agreements on revised terms on 21 September 2020.
A National Rail Contract to replace the ERMA on South Western Railway began in May 2021.
It was to have expired on 28 May 2023, but was extended by a Notice of Variation dated 9 February 2023 to 25 May 2025.
The government confirmed on 4 December 2024 that this contract would be terminated in May 2025 and return to public ownership.
The contract was terminated at 02.00 on 25 May 2025.

Commuter, outer suburban and regional services from London Waterloo to Guildford, Basingstoke, Portsmouth, Weymouth, Southampton, Salisbury, Yeovil, Exeter. Outer London local services. Also Ryde-Shanklin (I.O.W.), which is operated as Island Line.
