The Labour Government elected on 4 July 2024 announced that all National Rail Contracts would be terminated and run by the Department for Transport’s Operator of Last Resort (now DfT Operator Limited) until Great British Railways could take over.

Each contract would be terminated when it expired or at the first available break point (which may be the ‘core expiry date’), and possibly sooner in the event of a breach of contract by the operator.

The termination date of this operator’s contract is 12 October 2025.

description
A National Rail Contract dated 10 September 2021, which started on 19 September 2021 and ends 20 September 2026. The core expiry date was 15 September 2024.

The owners are Transport UK Group (60%) and Mitsui (40%).

This contract replaced the East Anglia 2016 franchise agreement.

Abellio ceased to own Greater Anglia after a management buyout of its British operations had been completed by Transport UK Group in February 2023.

The first break point in this operator’s contract was 15 September 2024. However, the Passenger Railway Services (Public Ownership) Bill had not received Royal Assent by that date. The next expiry date for this contract had been 20 September 2026.

The government confirmed on 4 December 2024 that it expected to terminate this contract in Autumn 2025, when it would return to public ownership after the operator had been given notice of not less than twelve weeks.

Greater Anglia said on 9 May 2025 that it would pass into public ownership on 12 October 2025.
