start date 28 November 1996 end date 11 November 2007
owned by National Express Group plc
legal title Midland Mainline Ltd
description Original contract for this first-generation franchise was ten years (original expiry 2006). This was extended by two years on 10 August 2000 in return for further investment worth £238m, derived by diverting premiums which would otherwise have been payable to the Strategic Rail Authority.
The investment included a fleet of Class 222 ‘Meridian’ diesel units built by Bombardier, which replaced smaller Class 170s on the route from 2004. The 222s were based on Bombardier’s Class 220 and 221 ‘Voyager’ units built for Virgin four or five years earlier, but the 222s had a redesigned internal layout.
The original symbol of Midland Mainline, based on a stag, was replaced with the second logo and different colours in 2004.
The franchise was replaced by East Midlands Trains in November 2007.
service area Long distance and regional services. London (St Pancras)-Leicester-Derby/Nottingham/Lincoln/Sheffield/York/Scarborough.
