The new house newspaper was an initiative of the Chairman, Dr Richard Beeching, and it replaced the individual regional house magazines which had been issued since nationalisation in 1948.
Until 1970, Rail News was produced in ‘slip’ editions, in which the front cover and some other pages were designed for the individual regions.
The lead story in this edition concerned a campaign by the Transport Salaried Staffs’ Association to make membership of the union compulsory for employees in certain clerical and management grades.
Such a requirement would be illegal today.
