The first edition of Rail News was published by the British Railways Board in July 1963.
This was the lead story in the London Midland Region edition

The early Rail News (later Railnews) sometimes trod a difficult path over union affairs.
Strikes and other industrial disputes gave the editorial staff even greater challenges.
The instinct of the journalists at Railnews was to report disputes and give the views of both sides, but more senior managers at BR sometimes stifled the debate, saying ‘the unions have their own papers. Let the staff read them for the union’s view.’
The modern Railnews is no longer a house newspaper nor the voice of management, so it is able to report union matters fairly and objectively, without restriction.
